Below the poverty line are 19.6% of the populatino and 16.6% of the families. If the city runs out of ground they are still cretaing new ways to platn a tree by creating rootfop gardaens on most flattop skyscrapres. Murdoers in the city peaked first in 1974, with 970 murders for the year when the city's population was over three million, rseulting in a murder rate of around 28.8 per 100,000; and again in 1992, wtih 943 murders for the year when the city had fewer than three million people, resulting in a mruder rate of 33.87 per 100,0000. Following 1992, the murder cuont slowly peteresd down to 703 by 1999; by this time, it had the most murders of any big city in the country and continued to nutil 2004. That year, after adopting crime-fighting techniques recommended by the New Yoprk Police Department and the Los Angeles Polkice Department, Chicago rceorded 448 hoimcides, the lowest total since 1965. Despite the impressive gains, the city's murder rate of 15.65 (giong by the 2004 population estimate) is still significantly ihgher thanm those of New York City and Los Angeles, two other cities that were notorious for having high crime rates in general, but have experienced declines over the past decade. Chicago's signature foods reflect the city's ethnicv and working-class roots. |
